Abbot Kinney Boulevard

A Local's Guide to Venice Beach's Best Mile

Some streets just have a personality. Abbot Kinney has a whole identity.

One mile long. Lined with palm trees. Home to some of the most talked-about restaurants, independent boutiques, and coffee bars in Los Angeles. GQ once called it the coolest block in America — and if you’ve spent an afternoon here, you get it.

From Hotel Erwin, Abbot Kinney is less than a mile away. Walk it in 15 minutes, grab a complimentary bike from the front desk and coast there in five, or simply skip the parking scramble entirely. The boulevard comes alive late morning through early evening, so plan your visit accordingly.

Venice Beach Coffee Shops

Intelligentsia Coffee — Serious Coffee, Seriously Good Space

Intelligentsia doesn’t do average. The Abbot Kinney location is a masterclass in both coffee craft and architecture with baristas who treat each pour like it matters. Because it does.

This is a destination for remote workers, late-morning locals, and anyone who wants to understand what specialty coffee actually tastes like. Expect a line on weekends. Expect it to be worth it.

Grab your coffee here before you start exploring the boulevard. The caffeine and the vibe both hit.

Venice Beach Community

First Fridays — When Abbot Kinney Becomes a Block Party

If your stay at Hotel Erwin lands on the first Friday of the month, don’t make any other plans.

First Fridays transforms the entire boulevard into an outdoor gathering — food trucks line the street, shops stay open late, local musicians take over corners, and the energy of the whole neighborhood shifts into something electric. It’s the best single night to experience Venice Beach community in its most authentic form.

It’s also one of the most concentrated food truck lineups in LA. Come hungry.

This is the version of Venice Beach that locals actually love. If you can time your trip around it, do it.

Venice Beach Style

Aviator Nation — The Hoodie You'll Wear for Years

You’ll spot the five-stripe logo within five minutes of arriving on Abbot Kinney. Aviator Nation is Venice Beach distilled into clothing — hand-crafted in California, inspired by 1970s surf culture, unreasonably soft.

The flagship store on Abbot Kinney feels less like a retail shop and more like a time capsule. Faded pastels, vintage vibes, everything made with care. It’s not cheap, but it’s the kind of piece you wear for a decade.

A classic Aviator Nation hoodie is the most functional souvenir you’ll take home — perfect for breezy evenings up at Kassi, our rooftop bar.

Dessert

Salt & Straw — The Ice Cream Line Worth Waiting In

Yes, there will be a line. No, you shouldn’t skip it.

Salt & Straw makes small-batch ice cream with an approach that’s part artisan craft, part creative experiment. Their classics — like Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons — are benchmarks. Their rotating seasonal menu is where they get genuinely wild: olive oil, bone marrow, lavender honey, blue cheese. It sounds strange. It works.

The smell of fresh waffle cones floats down the street before you even see the sign. Follow your nose.

They let you sample before you commit. Try at least three things before deciding. The adventurous choice is almost always the right one.

unique finds

Burro — The Shop That Gets Gift-Giving Right

Burro is where you go when you want a gift that actually means something. Tucked into the boulevard, this whimsical little shop curates goods that feel deliberate: art books and clever stationery, artisan candles, unexpected jewelry, objects that make you say “I didn’t know I needed that.”

It reflects the neighborhood’s creative spirit without trying too hard, which is very Venice. Give yourself at least 20 minutes to browse. You will leave with something you didn’t plan to buy.

Tip: They typically close by 6 PM, so make sure to swing by for your souvenirs before heading up to Kassi Venice Beach, our rooftop bar, for sunset drinks.

Venice Beach Dining

Gjelina — The Restaurant That Defined the Neighborhood

Every neighborhood has a restaurant that sets the tone. On Abbot Kinney, that restaurant is Gjelina.

Wood-fired, vegetable-forward, and dimly lit in just the right way, Gjelina has been drawing locals and food-obsessed visitors since 2008. The menu changes with the seasons, but the approach never does: quality ingredients, cooked simply, served without pretension. Their pizzas are some of the best in LA, and the back patio — especially on a warm Venice evening — feels like the city’s best-kept secret that everyone somehow already knows.

Try the mushroom toast or whatever seasonal vegetable side is running that week. Order at least one pizza. Sit outside if you can.

Walk-ins work, but a reservation saves stress. Either way, leave time for a slow meal — Gjelina isn’t a rush-through kind of place.
